  • When Dogs Go Hungry
    - Business Woman Baking for Beagles

    Going to the dogs - October 25, 2008 -

WHITBY -- One local woman's business plan came to her while she was doing something she does every day: walk her dogs.  Jo Ann Baguioro-Thompson was walking her beagles in the posh California neighbourhood where she used to live when she noticed other peoples' dogs were flocking to her. They wanted the homemade snacks she made for her pets.  That day Ms. Baguioro-Thompson realized the treats would be popular with more pooches than just her own beloved pets. That walk occurred in a place called Tiburon, so when the product line was born Ms. Baguioro-Thompson named it after the town.

Creating Tiburon Treats is now the entrepreneur's full-time job. Her experience in the business world working previously in corporate finance helped her "tremendously" when starting her own company, she said.  She tested her theory about how popular the product would be when she lived in Toronto. She would buy ingredients in mass quantities, bake for two days and sell off everything she made. The first time she tried the bake-athon she sold $1,000 worth of her wares in one day, she said. She has since moved to Whitby and the company's baking facility is located in Ajax.

The company offers 12 flavours, the four most popular being Canadian Cheese Dreams, Buster's Ranch Style Beef Cuts, Kiana's Peanut Butter Shortbread and Shorty's Sniff&Bite Triangles. The latter three flavours are named after the dogs that inspired the treats.  She attributes the long lives her pets have enjoyed to the careful attention she's paid to their diets. Kiana, one of the beagles Ms. Baguioro-Thompson was walking when she realized other pets were attracted to the scent of her treats, lived to be 14, well into old age for dogs.

The company will also make custom treats for special occasions -- Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's, Thanksgiving, Easter, Halloween -- whatever holidays owners want to include their furry friends in, Ms. Baguioro-Thompson said.  The treats are made with all-natural, locally produced ingredients. There is no sugar, salt, additives or by-products, she said. The puppy cookies go for $10 per pound.  For Ms. Baguioro-Thompson, the business started as a passion for her pets and that's what it still is. She makes everything her dogs eat and nothing is store-bought, she said.

For more information on Tiburon Treats, call 1-866-743-7226 or visit www.tiburontreats.com. And Ms. Baguioro-Thompson wants to offer an incentive for dog owners in the community to have their pets try the treats for free. The company will be offering a free bag of Tiburon Treats to the first 100 e-mail entries received at info@tiburontreats.com.

  • Amid difficult times, a light shines on success stories

It would be very easy and quite understandable to think the North American economy was going down faster than the Titanic after it hit the iceberg.

You'd be forgiven if you believed talk of bailouts and turnarounds was just so much blather about moving the deck chairs around while the unsinkable ship goes under.

But there is hope amid all the economic doom and gloom, and it can be found beyond the descending gas prices and bargains to be found once again in cross-border shopping on a lower Canadian dollar.

It can be seen in the success stories found in the bravehearts in our community who take a chance and take a shot with their own ideas.

Take, for instance, Brooklin's Marisa McTasney, who started Moxie Trades, a company that sells a line of workwear just for women. The 33-year-old came up with the idea after being unable to find work boots designed exclusively for women when she went shopping for construction gear. Seeing a need and discovering that 25 per cent of construction workers were female, she went after that market and has become so successful she was able to turn down an offer of $600,000 for 75 per cent of her company on the CBC hit show Dragon's Den. She did make a private deal with one of the Dragons and will launch her line of Moxie Xtreme workboots in Mark's Work Wearhouse in March.

Or what about Darryl Koster of Buster Rhino's, a restaurant owner who specializes in spicy sauces for his ribs? The Whitby resident, another Dragon's Den entrant, has made a success of his tasty treats. There is also Jo-Ann Baguioro-Thompson, who came up with the idea for her own business while walking her dog. That day the Whitby resident, who then lived in California and made her own homemade puppy treats, noticed other canines coming up and wanting to chow down on her Scooby snacks. So a new business was born and Ms. Baguioro-Thompson now mass-produces her own puppy treats.

The point is that, even in a down cycle, there is opportunity out there. With enough determination, inspiration and a good idea, you can succeed. These stories prove it.

  • ...our Local Community Involvement

    • The Whitby Curling Club (Whitby, Ontario) - As part of our commitment to help organizations in our local communities, Tiburon Treats donated 100 packages of our products to The Whitby Curling Club in participation at their 50th Attersley Bonspiel on December 3rd 2008.  All registered participants for this event received a pre-holiday Tiburon Treats special package.

"December 15, 2008 - On behalf of the Ladies Section of The Whitby Curling Club, I am writing to express our sincere thanks for your sponsorship of our 2008 Ladies Cash Bonspiel.  The committee worked very hard to organize this event and as usual it was a huge success.  As you know, the bonspiel was well received and all involved enjoyed themselves immensely.  We realize without the generous contributions of our sponsors, we would not be able to host such a successful event.  We sincerely appreciate your donations of dog treats.  Thank you once again from us all and Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Regards, Connie Young, Corresponding Secretary (cc: Sherry Howard, Chairperson)"

    • The Whitby Lions Club (Whitby, Ontario) - Together with one of our industry partners, Sara Fincham of Shirley's K-9 Klippery  and Tiburon Treats donated 2 large gift baskets to The Whitby Lions Club in time for their Annual New Year's Eve Dinner & Dance (equipped with a Silent Auction & Raffle) at the Heydonshore Pavillion in Whitby, Ontario.

"January 5, 2009 - Dear Jo Ann Baguioro-Thompson:  I am delighted to take this opportunity to thank you for your donation of the dog baskets to the Whitby Lions Club's third annual silent auction and for our raffle at our annual New Year's Eve Dance held at the Heydenshore Pavillion.  The added items to the baskets such as the premium shampoos and conditioners donated by Sara Fincham from Shirley's K-9 Klippery was a delightful bonus.

This year, almost 190 guests enjoyed a full course dinner, great dancing, with decorations and party favors befitting this occasion.  With your donation, you helped raise over $1,400 in our silent auction and over $700 from our raffle towards a dialysis machine for Lakeridge Health Whitby as well as other community charities.

The Whitby Lions Club, with over 45 years of service, is proud to continue to give back to the community.  Last year our assistance was given in part to:  Breast Cancer Research, High School Bursaries and the Denise House.

Jo Ann, thank you again for your donations and for Sara's contributions as well and I hope to look forward to your valuable support again for this coming New Year.

Sincerely, Debbie  Warren, Whitby Lions Club"
